The Exumas are your spot if you’re ready for a fun family getaway. If that’s you, then you don’t want to miss these islands! The Exumas are located in the Bahamas and is comprised of more than 365 tiny islands and cays. Therefore, this means you can visit a new place every day for a full year. All of the islands in Exuma have distinct vibes but the three major areas are Great Exuma, Little Exuma, and the Exuma Cays.
Seven Things to Do in Exuma
Exuma is a perfect destination for a fun family vacation as it features crystal clear turquoise waters, diverse local wildlife, varieties of enchanting spots, and wide ranges of family-friendly activities to try out. We now present seven of the best things to do in Exuma.
1) Stay at a Luxury Resort
The Exumas feature many luxury resorts, which also offer mind-blowing services that will make your trip more relaxing and luxurious. Popular amenities include stunning facilities such as swimming pools, spa services, restaurants, specialized tours and so on.
2) Go Swimming with Nurse Sharks
Another thrilling activity in Exuma is to swim with the sharks at the popular Compass Cay Marina. However, if you are not up for this nerve-wrecking adventure, you can just watch these creatures as they have a snack while swimming around the stairs of the dock.
These sharks eat small fish and other prey by sucking them into their mouth, so it is best to keep your fingers out of the water. If you are a true thrill seeker, you can also go swimming with them. These sharks will also allow you to reach out and pet them.
3) Don’t Miss Exuma’s Fish Fry
If you like to travel off the beaten path and try new foods and drinks, the ‘Fish Fry’ is a fun and interesting place to visit. With shacks lined up serving traditional Bahamian dishes, live music, great drinks, dancing and a fun place to hang out, I would recommend spending an evening here.
Tourists and locals love the Fish Fry on Great Exuma island, and it is recommended as one of the top things to see and do while visiting Exuma. The Fish Fry features a number of different fish fry stalls, all offering their own unique dishes and drinks. Visit one, two, or all of them. Some of the stalls you will find are Charlie’s Restaurant and Bar and Tino’s Deck. You’ll enjoy Shirley’s for the grouper fingers, which is my favorite dish.
4) Feed Stingrays at Chat ‘n Chill
Chat ‘N’ Chill is a fun dining experience located on Stocking Island. Visit it by water taxi during a day trip to Stocking Island. Chat ‘n Chill beach is an ultimate family vacation destination in Exuma being filled with a plethora of activities that you can try out.
The highlight of the trip here is to feed and swim with the stingrays. You can also just relax in the hammocks while enjoying the cool island breeze and great views of the beach and ocean. Mix and mingle with other tourists as well as the locals, as this is a hot spot for everyone to spend the day!
5) Enjoy A Mind-Blowing Sunrise or Sunset
The Exumas offer priceless dawn and dusk sceneries that you should not miss. There is a plethora of places that you can enjoy such sceneries, whether it is from your luxury resort, the capital city of George Town or from one of its many islands. The Exuma sun will not disappoint you. This is truly one of the best romantic activities for couples to enjoy as the colors are vibrant. Capturing such moments are certainly priceless.
6) Snorkeling in Thunderball Grotto
Here the most famous snorkeling adventure is of Thunderball Grotto, a magnificent underwater cave system located just west of Staniel Cay. This cave has been featured in numerous movies like the popular James Bond movie Thunderball. You can head to the main Grotto where you will find coral and bright tropical fish. It also features a rock with large holes above and below which allows rays of light to pass through.
7) Go Swimming with Pigs
Exuma is popularly known all over the world for the swimming pigs. A visit with the swimming pigs is truly a unique family vacation experience not to miss. You will be mesmerized just by watching as these animals wade through the water to welcome the boat once you get there.
However, it is best to visit the Pig Beach early in the morning before the pigs get filled up with foods from the tourists. This beach also has a mesmerizing scenery which makes it a great place to take Instagram worthy pictures while holding the pigs. Your kids will also love to hang-out with a group of piglets or swimming with these lovable animals. This is surely a once in a lifetime experience that you will not want to miss.
Swimming with The Pigs
Undoubtedly, the best way to experience the pigs is to see them in person. Pig Island is accessible only by boat, and most vessels take 10 to 20 people at a time.
